Liz Truss is resigning as Conservative Party leader.
Speaking outside No 10 Downing Street, she said a party leadership election will be completed in the next week. She says she will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.
Liz Truss says she delivered on energy bills and cutting national insurance, and set out vision for a “low-tax, high-growth economy”. But, she said, “I recognise I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party”. She has notified King Charles of her resignation and met with Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the 1922 Committee.
Liz Truss has been Conservative party leader for 45 days: she becomes the shortest-serving Prime Minister in UK history.
